If you live in Bergen, Hudson, or Passaic County, have a civil (non-criminal) legal problem, and cannot afford a private attorney, please call one of our offices to find out if we can help you. In addition to multi-lingual staff, we also have extensive translation services in order to accommodate the diverse population of our service area. Our knowledgeable intake staff will introduce you to our services and determine if you are eligible for representation.

Everything you share with NNJLS is confidential. If we determine you’re financially eligible and your legal problem falls within our case acceptance guidelines, we will schedule an additional appointment with an attorney or paralegal to learn more about your case and discuss ways we may be able to help.

This process is important to our operations and helps us to continue serving the community. Please allow us 24-36 hours to respond to any inquiries.

We strongly recommend that you call the office before coming in to make sure that an attorney will be available to talk to you.
If you have an emergent legal matter, an attorney may be able to meet with you the same day. If your case is not an emergency, you will be given an appointment for a screening interview on the next available day. All services are no-cost to clients who meet NNJLS’s income and case acceptance guidelines. If NNJLS cannot help you, we will attempt to refer you to an attorney or social services agency that may be able to help you. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911.

At NNJLS, we try to assist as many people as we can with their civil legal troubles. NNJLS must screen clients for eligibility before taking on a case and we evaluate each application on an individual basis. This initial eligibility screening includes but is not limited to: 

  • speaking with one of our intake specialists about your legal problem, by phone or in-person by appointment, to confirm your case is one that NNJLS handles.

    • Please have all relevant information (notices, documents, etc.) in front of you when you contact us.

  • questions about your household income/household assets/social security information/taxes/etc.

  • confirming you live or have a case in our service area (Bergen, Hudson or Passaic counties).
